Through a comparative approach to the
historical conceptions of Jewish and Black
masculinity in America, Dr. Miriam Mora traces
how antisemitic and anti-Black depictions of
men shaped social perceptions from earlier
eras through the 1960s and 1970s. Mora
analyzes the starkly contrasting stereotypes
used to marginalize Jewish and Black men,
highlighting the ways these representations
were constructed and weaponized over time.
By charting the interactions between these
communities, she reveals their shared struggle
to confront and challenge the delegitimizing
power of negative male stereotypes, focusing
on the significant efforts in the 1960s to
redefine and reclaim their identities.
