Deeper Teachings of the Sukkah: Shelter, Solidarity & Service

For one week each year, Sukkot asks us to do something radical: to leave the comfort of our homes and dwell in a temporary shelter. What might this ancient practice teach us about housing insecurity, hospitality, and our responsibility to care for our neighbors?

Join us under the sukkah at the J for a lively text study exploring the history and theology of Jewish wandering, welcome, and communal responsibility towards those experiencing housing insecurity — from Abraham’s renowned hospitality, to rabbinic visions of supporting those in need, to the Jewish-led tenant rights movement in New York City, and our own laws defining homelessness in Houston. We’ll put our learning into action by assembling hygiene and supply kits for youth in Houston experiencing housing insecurity.

This event is hosted by Repair the World, the Jewish service movement connecting young adults to meaningful service and Jewish learning while building community and working toward a more just world (tikkun olam). For young adults and young professionals, ages 18-39.
