Congregation Brith Shalom Shabbat Shuvah Service Dedicated to the Hostages and their Families

October 05, 2024 9:30AM - 12:00PM

Congregation Brith Shalom, a Conservative synagogue at 4610 Bellaire Boulevard, hosts a Shabbat Shuvah morning service dedicated to the hostages and their families on October 5 at 9:30 AM. Revital Zohar Pour, founder of The Red Balloon Movement awareness campaign, will present a special talk.

As an Israeli living in America while her home country endures a horrible war, Revital Zohar Pour has been navigating the emotional and mental challenges of witnessing the conflict from afar. After the October 7 attacks, she felt the profound weight of balancing personal safety in the U.S. with the reality of her homeland in crisis.

This distance and heartache led her to create The Red Balloon Movement, a global initiative with a community of thousands of volunteers aimed at creating awareness, saying NO to terror, YES to humanity, and YES to the immediate release of the hostages.
In her talk, Revital will explore the emotional burden of being far from loved ones during war, the sense of helplessness, and the call for urgent, collective action. She emphasizes that this is not just Israel’s fight against Hamas, but a global battle to uphold fundamental moral values, ensuring the world remains a safe place for future generations to grow up, for us to live, and for our elders to retire with dignity.

Brith Shalom Rabbi Ranon Teller comments “Shabbat Shuvah is the Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. It is a Shabbat designated for us to ‘return’ to our best selves. We pray that the Red Ballon initiative will, in some small way, further increase awareness of the hostages in Gaza, support their families, and help bring them home.”
