Lisa Klein is the Managing Director of Jewish Education at the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston. A native Houstonian, Lisa grew up at Congregation Beth Yeshurun where she attended the William S. Malev Religious school and worked as a B’nai Mitzvah tutor. She was the recipient of the Mozelle Barg Outstanding Hillel Graduate award, earning this honor the year after her brother, Michael Lewis won the same award, the only back-to-back siblings to earn this honor.
Lisa earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Art from the University of Texas at Austin, where she was active at the Texas Hillel and Chabad Student Center and earned a Master’s Degree in Math Education from the University of Houston. Lisa began her teaching career at The Shlenker School, first in Early Childhood and then moving into the newly established elementary school. Lisa taught second grade and then became the first 5thgrade teacher at the growing school. She then brought her teaching skills to the Beth Israel religious school, teaching Judaics and Hebreweventually becoming the Hebrew supervisor while raising her family.
In 1994, after having her fourth child, Lisa began her career at the Jewish Federation working with the suburban synagogue schools. Over her 27 years at the Federation, Lisa’s role and responsibilities have grown to include leading professional development for teachers and principals, convening networks of educators, and fostering a culture of collaboration among Houston’s Early Childhood Schools, Day Schools and Congregational religious schools. Lisa and her husband, Kevin Klein, are members of United Orthodox Synagogues, and have four children and four grandchildren.
